Haiti 2030, A republic refounded on values
The fact is that in our political discussions, we have become accustomed to focusing solely on the actions, errors, disappointments, and faults attributed to past government regimes or present-day political leaders and activists, or on the messianic promises of those aspiring to lead us in the future. With such a paradigm as the sole foundation of our political life, we are incapable of envisioning what our future holds. This structure of political life condemns us to govern our country with our eyes constantly in the rearview mirror. In such a dynamic, any vision of the future is tainted by the failures of our recent past and the disaster of our present.
Every nation needs an ideological anchor to anchor its political model. But what is ours? Once we declared independence in 1804, we essentially drafted constitution after constitution. The primary purpose of our various constitutions being to accommodate the political vision of the historical moment in question, our constitutions are tailor-made to make any given political agenda possible. It is not our political agendas that are hardwired into the constitutions. The constitutional documents themselves are very loosely rooted in any overarching ideology.
This manifesto aims to play this role. At the very least, this work hopes to be a catalyst for awakening Haitian political genius by reviving debates about ideas that must supplant the polemical, partisan debates and political squabbles that have dominated national life for far too long. All of Haiti's civic, political, economic, and social forces must embrace the ideology proposed in this book and use it to base and develop their programs, projects, actions, and political demands.
In this manifesto, we finally have a common basis for discussing the future of Haiti, let's seize it!
